YEAR/MODEL INTERCHANGE LIST (Clones & Sisters)
This list began in 1990 with a stated need in the Accident Reconstruction
community for a centralized source of equivalent vehicles for referring to NHTSA
crash tests, since NHTSA does not retest vehicles every year if they have not
changed significantly, and generally will only test one sample vehicle of a
family of vehicles that may be sold under different brand names but are
essentially the same vehicle structurally. As such the focus of the list is
primarily frontal collisions (for deriving stiffness coefficients, etc.). There
are occasions when, for example, significant interior changes are made in the
middle of a model's run which may be relevant to occupant protection but will
not be picked up in the list if there are not significant structural changes
(i.e. changes in "hard points", wheelbase, etc.) at the same time.
Often the degree of change is arguable. (If you were to believe some of the
manufacturers, their cars are "all new" every year!). Whether to start a new
"base" year is sometimes a judgment call and you may disagree. When there are
changes like these the remarks column will generally say "Restyle" in some form
or another. The start and end year may or may not have a break at this point,
depending on the perceived degree of structural change. Either way, the
terminology is there to alert you to this. If you have some insight into a
specific area, call or e-mail me with your input.
Regarding trucks and SUVs, remember that the focus of the list is frontal
crashes. Therefore comments will sometimes reflect an equivalent vehicle with
(Front), (Fr), etc. This is because, for example, many of the truck-based SUVs
have essentially the same structure from the cowl forward as the pickup trucks
from which they were derived, but are greatly different to the rear. Therefore,
if you are dealing with (for example) side impacts, rear impacts, yaw inertia,
etc. the vehicles will generally NOT be equivalent.
Please also allow me the standard disclaimer that I do not in any way guarantee
the accuracy of these lists. Some similarities represent my own estimates, and
some of the older years are from memory. Most are pulled from specifications
tables, which may contain inaccuracies all their own. Use common sense-if
something seems wrong, check it (and tell me). If you have suggestions,

The list is produced annually for the meeting of the Accident Investigation and
Reconstruction Practices Committee (a Standards committee of SAE) at the SAE
Congress in Detroit, and is generally available from several sources after that.
As of 2009 all cars, trucks, vans, and SUV's (4-door SUV's are also called
Station Wagons) are incorporated into a single list, including both Import Makes
and Domestic Makes. Also, Domestic-make cars prior to 1980 are included from
1974 to 1980 (just ignore the heading prior to 1980).
This CD includes the list in Adobe Acrobat (.pdf) format as well as the entire
database in its native format, Microsoft Access 2007(.accdb)

Upper Grille
1) Open the hood and remove the nylon rivets that are
holding the radiator cover. Use the flathead screw driver
to pop up the “heads” of the rivets. Then pull the 7 rivets
free (see Figure 1).

and Christine Scioli have their pick of
Pontiacs. The Novato, Calif., couple
have three: a 2005 Sunfire, an ’04
Vibe and ’04 GTO.
The Sciolis’ film and video work has
entailed promoting everything from
local nurseries to medical services to
fashion and area politicians. They’re
also filmmakers who have written,
produced and directed a feature-
length thriller called The Beckoning.
“This was the first feature we
made together,” says Don Scioli, who
was part of a team that won a
Student Academy Award® for Best
Short Film (A Field of Honor) while
attending the University of Southern
California film school.
But it was a commercial they shot
for a Pontiac dealership in Marin and
Sonoma counties that first beckoned
them to Pontiac. “It didn’t take us
long to realize these Pontiac models
were indeed great cars,” Scioli says.
“We use the Sunfire and the Vibe
to carry film and video equipment to
all our shoots,” he adds. “They’re fuel
efficient,* drive very well on some of
the twisting back roads around here
and are easy to park in small places.
With the Pontiacs we chose, we got
some of the benefits of hybrids with-
out the silly waiting lists and
markups.”

- LOWER EXHAUST
INSTALLATION STEPS
1) Drop muffler and tailpipe by removing all rubber isolators, behind rear axle, off of hangers. There will be (2) or (3)
depending on vehicle. On Ion Redline rearward isolator hanger needs to be bent down slightly for fastener clearance.
2) Install rearward fasteners. On cobalt, pursuit, and Ion vehicles it will be necessary to drill both rear holes. Use
rearmost slot that does not go all the way through frame as guide to drill clearance hole for 1/2" bolts. On HHR it is
necessary to enlarge rearmost slot on passenger side only. Fishwire 1/2" carriage bolts and blocks through access
slots in bottom of frame both sides.
3) Install forward fasteners both sides. Insert carriage bolts and blocks into access slot and drop back down through slot
making sure block spans both sides of slot.
4) While holding muffler down slide hitch up and over muffler into place making sure that you do not push fasteners
back up into frame. Install hex flange nuts on all (4) bolts and do not tighten.
5) Before tightening bolts slide hitch over towards the passenger's side and up
against trunk pan. While holding hitch against trunk pan tighten bolts.
6) Torque all 1/2" fasteners to 75 lb-ft.
7) Reinstall muffler isolator hangers.
PERIODICALLY CHECK THIS RECEIVER HITCH TO ENSURE THAT ALL FASTENERS
ARE TIGHT AND THAT ALL STRUCTURAL COMPONENTS ARE SOUND.

In 1990, the base model was dropped in favor of a sedan version (replacing the 6000 which ended production the next year and the Canada-only Tempest), entering production on September 12, 1989. Installation of this baseplate requires removing the middle plastic belly pan, the air dam, the headlights, bumper molding, and lower plastic moldings. Holes will be drilled out in the front cross frame of the vehicle. The bumper molding and the air dam need to be trimmed. 1. Read the General Instruction Sheet included with this baseplate. 2. Remove the middle plastic belly pan and air dam from underneath the car. 3. The headlights, bumper molding and lower plastic moldings need to be removed so the baseplate can be in- stalled. 4. Bolt the two extension braces (Item 2) to the baseplate (Item 1) as shown on the diagram. There are two black molded frames with two bolts each, remove each outside bolt of the frames and bolt on the braces (Item 2) with the spacers (Item 4), use the 12mm bolts and lock washers (Items 9 and 10) . Be sure to use Loctite on all bolts and hand tighten. Now the baseplate (Item 1) can be held up to the front cross frame of the car so that the holes can be marked and drilled. Use a 17/32″ drill bit. Be sure to center the baseplate on the frame. 5. After the holes have been drilled, bolt the baseplate (Item 1) to the frame. NOTE: Use the flat washers (Item 11) as shown in the diagram for 1997 models. They will be placed between the frame and the baseplate. Use the 1/2″ bolts (Item 6) and 1/2″ lock washers (Item 7) and 1/2″ nut plates (Item 3). Tighten all bolts of the baseplate and braces. Be sure to use Loctite on all bolts.

Pontiac G6 Grille Installation 1) UPPER GRILLE INSTALLATION 1.1) Remove the upper grilles. Each upper grille is held in place by 8 tabs. Using a playing card and a flat-head screwdriver, carefully pry the chrome molding away from the bumper in each of the 8 locations shown in Fig. 1 The inner grille is held in place by 4 tabs (1 on each side). Using the screwdriver and playing card, carefully pry these free from the bumper. BE VERY CAREFUL WHEN REMOVING THE FACTORY GRILLES FROM YOUR VEHICLE. THE PAINTED FINISH OF YOUR VEHICLE IS EASILY DAMAGED, BUT IF PROPER CARE IS TAKEN, YOU CAN EASILY REMOVE THE GRILLES WITHOUT HARMING THE SURROUNDING PORTIONS OF THE Fig. 1 – Location of upper grille border retainers and method of removal. 1.2) Remove radiator cover. To gain the access necessary to install the upper grilles, you will need to free the radiator cover that is held in place by four 10mm bolts and six pop-top fasteners (locations pictured in Fig. 2). Caution!!! Never work on a hot exhaust system. Serious injury in the form of burns can result If the vehicle has been in use and the exhaust system is hot, allow vehicle to cool for at least 1 hour. Always wear eye protection when working under any vehicle. Note: It is our recommendation that you use a hoist or hydraulic lift to facilitate the installation of your new Borla Performance Cat-Back â„¢ Exhaust System. Taking all under car safety precautions, lift the vehicle using a hoist or hydraulic lift. Once this has been done, you may begin the removal of your old exhaust system from your vehicle. Note: Before removing the original exhaust system from your vehicle, please compare the parts you have received with the bill of materials provided on the previous page to assure that you have all the parts necessary for the installation of your new Borla Performance Cat-Back â„¢ Exhaust System. Original Exhaust System Removal Note: With a used vehicle, we suggest a penetrating spray lubricant to be applied liberally to all exhaust fasteners and allowing a significant period of time for the chemical to lubricate the threads before attempting to disassemble. 1. Unbolt the flange shown in figure 1 located behind the catalytic converter. 2. Lubricate all the hangers and rubber isolators as the ones shown in figure 2. 3. Using a muffler stand or an additional person to hold the original exhaust up in place, remove all the hangers from the rubber isolators and then remove the exhaust system as shown in figure 3 from the vehicle. Borla Performance Cat-Backâ„¢ Exhaust System Installation 1. Using the original gasket, place the x-pipe assembly up into position as shown in figure 4. Using the hardware supplied, secure the flange hand tight. 2. Place a clamp over the expanded ends of both left and right extension pipes and set them each into position as shown in figure 5 making sure to install the hangers into the rubber isolators.
